Lady Buffs fall in battle with Will Rogers

Jan. 9—The Lady Buffs refused to give up.

McAlester hosted Will Rogers Tuesday at the McAlester Activity Center in a return to district action, with the Lady Buffs falling 53-43 in a hard-fought battle.

Katie Allen nabbed a three at the top of the perimeter to start the scoring for McAlester. The Lady Ropers answered with a 5-0 run, but that was broken up by Allen with a cleanup jumper. Allen later nabbed a score, then an assist to Beaudee Nystrom on a pick-and-roll to make it an 11-9 Rogers lead after the first quarter.

The Lady Ropers got a score to start the second period, and the Lady Buffs answered once more with a 4-0 run from Nystrom. Will Rogers next rattled off a 14-0 run, resulting in a 27-13 Lady Ropers lead at the half.

Nystrom earned the first points of the second half with a cleanup score, followed by the Lady Ropers with back-to-back buckets. Rylee Forehand swished a triple in response for the Lady Buffs, cutting back into the deficit.

The Lady Ropers rattled off another quick run, but McAlester found one of its own featuring points from Nystrom, Allen, Kayla Johnson, and Indya Hishaw on the way to a 41-27 Will Rogers lead after three quarters.

McAlester kept chipping away, using points from Rylan Lesnau, Johnson, Nystrom, and Allen to keep the Lady Buffs within striking distance. But the Lady Ropers found an answer to hold on for the win.

Nystrom led the Lady Buffs with 15 points, followed by Allen with 13 points, Lesnau with six points, four points for Johnson, three for Forehand, and Hishaw with two points.

Next up for McAlester, the Lady Buffs will travel to Tulsa Friday to face Holland Hall at 6:30 p.m.
