L/L-M girls' hoops get 60-30 D2 tourney win over M/P-B

Feb. 9—JAMESTOWN — The LaMoure/Litchville-Marion girls' basketball team outscored the Medina/Pingree-Buchnan Thunder 17-2 in the second quarter and that was enough to see the No. 2 seed get a 60-30 win on Friday, Feb. 9, at the Jamestown Civic Center.

The start of the game was competitive as the Loboes were only up 15-9 heading into the second quarter. However, the competitive nature of the game did not last as the only Thunder basket in the second quarter came from Allison Thomas on a floater to cut the deficit to 26-11 with approximately four minutes to go in the first half. That ended an 11-0 run for the Loboes, who would go on a 20-2 run in the frame to head into the half up 32-11.

"Part of it (the second quarter struggles) is probably playing on the big court, being a little tired possibly, working hard on defense," Thunder head coach Cory Mack said. "They took it right at us from there."

The Thunder scored more points on their first possession of the third quarter than they did in the entirety of the second quarter as Thomas splashed a three to cut the deficit to 32-14. The Thunder kept it up 32-16 but the Loboes quickly responded with a run to push the lead out to 51-20 late in the third.

The Thunder attempted to fight back in the fourth quarter outscoring the Loboes 10-9 but it proved to be too little too late in this one. Both teams were able to go down their bench as the Loboes played 11 different players and the Thunder played 12 different players.

The Loboes forced 15 turnovers in the win and scored 17 points off those turnovers.

"We just emphasized playing our style of defense, understanding our matchups, understanding our assignments, knowing what we think they're gonna try to do to us and then being intelligently aggressive," Loboes head coach Ben Holen said. "The big thing we emphasized was finishing the possession with a rebound and we did outrebound them by a decent number so I was pleased with that."

The Loboes are back in action at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, when they take on Kidder County. The Thunder return to the court at 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 10, when they face off against Strasburg-Zeeland.
