Kyle Whittingham did not agree with the lack of a flag late in Utah’s loss against Washington Friday night in the Pac-12 Championship Game.

The Utes turned it over on downs with 27 seconds left when Jason Shelley’s fourth-down pass to Siaosi Mariner fell incomplete after Washington’s Byron Murphy appeared to make contact with Mariner before the pass got to him.

Whittingham was livid when no penalty was called at the time and the play and his reaction was one of the first things he was asked about after the game.

“Wouldn’t you be? Did you see the same thing I saw? I don’t know what I can say without getting fined but I’m used to it.”

Whittingham and Utah certainly have a case for pass interference. Murphy arrived early. A pass interference penalty would have given Utah a first down and kept the Utes’ slim hopes at a lead or a tie within reach.

Murphy was the game’s MVP because he had two interceptions and the game-deciding pass breakup (even if the legitimacy is up for debate). He scored a touchdown on one of those interceptions; it was the game’s only touchdown in Washington’s 10-3 win.
