Ground has been broken.

Washington Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma gave an update on a project to build a new gymnasium at the YMCA of Greater Flint, Michigan.

“Today we did the groundbreaking for the new YMCA in the city of Flint, Michigan! This means so much to me more than anything I've ever done,” Kuzma posted on Instagram Thursday.

Kuzma initially announced his donation of $1 million to the project back in January, noting that the YMCA in Flint was like his ‘home away from home’ growing up and that he’d spend countless hours there practicing basketball until his mother got off work. Now, Kuzma’s vision is beginning to take shape in the place where he can credit the formation of his basketball career.

“I'm hoping that one day another kid from Flint that aspires to be an athlete, an artist or even a doctor can use these wonderful resources that we are creating for our community!” Kuzma’s post concluded.

Other notable athletes commended the 27-year-old for his project as well. Natasha Cloud, Donovan Mitchell, Jared Dudley, J.R. Smith, Matt Barnes and others voiced their appreciation for Kuzma in the comments.

It is unclear when the project will be finished, but when Kuzma originally announced his donation it was expected that the facility will be open for business in early 2025.
