Kroger's chocolate milk has a huge cult following. We figured out why

National Chocolate Milk Day falls on Sept. 27 every year, but every day is chocolate milk day for me.

Back when we were kids, we enjoyed the tasty treat out of those mini-cartons almost every afternoon at school. It was the perfect way to wash down what was typically a mediocre lunch (like school pizza, for example). However, the cafeteria version never held a candle to what I believe is the greatest chocolate milk known to man: Kroger’s.

While discussing National Chocolate Milk Day with my colleagues, I brought up my love for Kroger’s version and how it is the greatest chocolate milk of all time – the GCMOAT. Although they live in Cincinnati, and some have been in the area for years, no one knew of the greatness of Kroger chocolate milk.

So, we did a blind taste test (see the video above) in which we compared popular brands. And which one do you think won?

Yes, Kroger. I wouldn't have written this article if it had been a different option.

What makes Kroger's chocolate milk so special?

The Kroger-brand chocolate milk has the perfect blend of sweetness and dairy. While some brands taste like chocolate-flavored water (I’m talking about you, Nesquik), and others are just milk with a hint of cocoa, the Cincinnati-based grocery retailer gets the flavor right every time. It's sweet without going too much in that direction.

“Kroger chocolate milk starts with sweeteners and our special chocolate flavor base blended into the milk," Kroger representative Jenifer Moore said to The Enquirer via email. "The finished blend includes vitamins added (to the low-fat chocolate milk) and is pasteurized and homogenized before heading to a local Kroger store.”

Is there a time and place for other great brands like Fairlife? No question. Do I also enjoy Hershey’s chocolate syrup from time to time? Who doesn’t? But when I want the perfect chocolate milk, only one has my heart.

If I needed protein after high school football or basketball practice, I stopped by Kroger. When my friends and I went to the store for a midnight snack, we always picked up Kroger chocolate milk for dessert.

It’s not just a drink. It’s a lifestyle.

I am not alone in my belief that I have found the superior chocolate milk, either. There is a devoted fan base on social media.
