Kristi Toliver leaving Mystics not expected to affect her job as Wizards assistant coach

Star WNBA guard Kristi Toliver signing with the Los Angeles Sparks represents a major loss for the Washington Mystics, though the news is not expected to affect her status as an NBA assistant coach for the Washington Wizards.

The team expects Toliver to continue in her role on Scott Brooks' staff, just as she would if she were playing for the Mystics. Though the Sparks are located across the country and not under the same ownership group, as the Mystics are with the Wizards, the WNBA schedule should allow Toliver to operate just as if she were still playing for a Washington team.

The Sparks do not begin their season until May 16. That game happens to be in Washington against the Mystics.

The Wizards' last regular season game is April 15. Even if they make the playoffs, Toliver should have weeks to spare before the WNBA season kicks off.

As for what happens next season, it's too early to tell. NBA coaching positions aren't the most stable of jobs and Brooks will be entering a contract year. Toliver could also decide working two jobs 3,000 miles away from each other is too much.

But for now, Toliver will remain on the Wizards' staff with no changes planned.
