Get to know AJC Playmaker of the Year E'Marie Lewis

Mar. 29—This year's Playmaker of the Year of the All-Johnson County Girls Basketball Team is Burleson guard E'Marie Lewis. The senior guard helped Burleson earn an overall record of 16-13 (8-6 in district play) and reach the postseason for the first time since 2015. Lewis was a team leader in points, assists and steals during the season.

You helped lead Burleson to the playoffs for the first time since 2015. How rewarding was it to break through like this?

"It's an honor to be a part of such a big accomplishment, especially when people were doubting us and saying we couldn't do it because of our past record, new coaching and new players — it's definitely great proving so many people wrong. However, It was a huge accomplishment as a whole and hopefully this will put some eyes on the Lady Elks' program and Coach Gomez going forward."

You stand at 5-foot-2 but you play with great skill and heart. What motivates you to play as hard and as well as you do?

"Being a 5-foot guard, I try to do little things and play with heart every second on the court. What motivates me is my dad because he has always taught me heart over height no matter what. He also taught me that playing with fight and heart will get me anywhere, so I keep that in the back of my mind every game."

What is something you learned from your basketball career at Burleson that you will carry with you for the rest of your life?

"Playing at Burleson High has definitely taught me so many lessons, but I would say the main one that will stick with me is that anything is possible if you just put your mind to it, but patience is key."
