Knights stay alive, keep dancing in 1A State Tournament

Mar. 1—HENDERSON — The young duo of Gary Wilkins and Nick Pentoney clicked up once again for 46 points to keep the Knights dancing in the 1A State Playoffs.

Vance Charter's 35-point third quarter allowed them to overcome the second-half deficit and complete the 85-81 playoff comeback against the Lejeune Devil Pups.

Freshman Nick Pentoney has been a sensation all season, and Tuesday night's playoff performance was no exception. The undersized, nifty point-guard led his team in scoring with an electric 24 points as he continues to receive the green light from his coach, Taron Downey.

"The greenest of green lights," said Downey. "Neon green."

Coach Downey's confidence in his team is riding high as they stay alive in the tournament. And it's not just Pentoney who is encouraged to shoot, Downey says all of his guards have the green light, but he still wants to temper his expectations going into the second round and see his young team play a solid, all-round game.

With both of Vance Charter's varsity teams successful in the first round of their journey to the state finals, and Vance County's girls' team flying past Westover, that meant three state playoff wins took place in Henderson Tuesday night. With all three teams advancing to the second round, fans of Henderson High School hoops will have plenty to cheer for come Friday night:

— No. 15 Vance Charter boys will face No. 2 Washington County in Plymouth

— No. 16 Vance County will try and upset No. 1 South Central in Greenville

— No. 4 Vance Charter girls will face No. 13 Northside at home in Henderson

All three games will tip-off at 6 p.m. Consider showing out this weekend to support your local teams in the playoffs as their road to a championship ring hardens.
