Trae Young draws foul against Knicks Game 1 playoffs 2021

Knicks big man Taj Gibson, who played a big role during Game 1 against the Atlanta Hawks in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, spoke Tuesday about Trae Young's game-winning shot and the guard's knack for drawing fouls.

"It was a broken up play," Gibson told reporters via Zoom. "He just made a strong play. He was able to get to his right hand and make a tough shot. It rattled in and out but he finished and it went in. We had a couple of games this year where we were lucky the ball rimmed out for us. That's the name of the game."

Young's shot dropped through the net with 0.9 seconds left.

The Knicks will look to stop Young and the Hawks in Game 2 on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden, and part of the job will be limiting the amount of times Young gets to the free-throw line -- something he did far too often in Game 1.

"He's extremely smart with knowing how to get foul calls," Gibson said. "He's been doing that all season long. It's nothing new. Just have to be more poised while our hands are back and just stay more aggressive on defense. But he's a talented player. He's gonna get his. You just have to stay focused, stay resilient."

GIBSON TALKS DERRICK ROSE'S IMPACT

"The first thing I saw in Game 1 was he was just being his normal self. He just plays strong. He's being a strong leader, being a point guard, being vocal. He's just playing well. Young guys were coming in playing extremely well, too. We had some good energy.

"I think Derrick is gonna be special coming down the stretch. But first things first, we gotta just focus on ourselves. It takes 15 guys."
