Knicks decline to extend contract of general manager Scott Perry, per reports

Despite getting to the second round of the NBA playoffs and enjoying a period of relative success recently, the New York Knicks are still making a change in their front office.

According to ESPN and multiple reports, the Knicks are opting not to extend the contract of general manager Scott Perry, who was operating this past season under an expiring contract.

While Perry has been in that role since the 2017-18 season, he has not been New York's primary decision-maker with personnel matters since the Knicks hired former agent Leon Rose as team president in February 2020. Still, Perry has been a part of something of a revival for New York, which has made the playoffs two of the past three seasons after missing them the previous seven seasons.

The Knicks find themselves at a crossroads. They have built a solid young core of talent but seem to lack a marquee player to compete seriously in the Eastern Conference. Despite having a rich history and playing in the largest market, though, the team has still struggled to draw elite free agent acquisitions.

Guards Jalen Brunson and RJ Barrett have starred for New York, and young players such as Immanuel Quickley, Mitchell Robinson and Quentin Grimes have shined in flashes, but this offseason is expected to see a number of star players become available in free agency.

The Knicks finished the season 47-35, giving them the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference. New York upset the Donovan Mitchell-led Cleveland Cavaliers in convincing fashion in the first round. The Knicks, however, were overmatched by the red-hot Miami Heat — the eventual Eastern Conference champions — in the conference semifinals.

This means that New York still has not advanced beyond the second round of the NBA postseason since 2000. In their seven appearances during that span, the Knicks have failed to get out of the first round five times.
