Klay Thompson upset after being left off NBA's 75th Anniversary Team

The NBA finished releasing its 75th Anniversary Team on Thursday, and Klay Thompson isn’t happy after being left off the list.

The Golden State Warriors star, who is still working back from a pair of brutal leg injuries, took to Instagram on Thursday night and made it clear he feels like he belongs with the 76 — yes, 76 — players who made the top-75 list.

“Maybe I’m just naive in my ability to play basketball, but in my head I’m top 75 all time,” Thompson wrote on his story.

Thompson has certainly made a great case to land on the list — which the league has been releasing all week as a way to kick off its 75th anniversary season.

The five-time All-Star was a massive part in the Warriors’ three recent title runs. He’s averaged 19.5 points and 3.5 rebounds while shooting nearly 46% from the field and almost 42% from behind the arc in his eight seasons in the league.

The 31-year-old, however, hasn’t played since the 2018-19 season, when he tore his ACL during the NBA Finals. He then suffered an Achilles injury before last season started, which kept him out another year. He’s currently on pace to return to the court for the Warriors around Christmas.

Steve Kerr: ‘How do you differentiate?’

Though it’s easy to see why Thompson is upset about his snub, he certainly isn’t the only one who didn’t make the cut.

Tracy McGrady, Tony Parker, Vince Carter, LaMarcus Aldridge and Pau Gasol were among other big names who were not added to the top-75 list — and every single one of them could make a strong case.

The list itself was created by a panel of voters of some of the biggest names in and around the sport — several of which were also included on the list. So, take that as you will.

While the list itself is certainly an honor to be included on, even Warriors coach Steve Kerr was questioning how it’s possible to even define the best 75 people ever to play in the NBA on Thursday night.

“How do you differentiate? Seems like there are 50-60 guys who are automatic, then you’re just — pick one,” he said, via the OCRegister’s Mirjam Swanson. “I think those guys are top 75 based on winning, two-way basketball, everything that matters more than stats.”
