Klay confident 'championship DNA' makes Dubs title favorites originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

After taking a commanding three-games-to-none lead over the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference finals on Sunday night, the Warriors’ chances of reaching their sixth NBA Finals in eight seasons are looking pretty good.

But are they the favorite to win it all?

Unsurprisingly, Klay Thompson seems to think so.

After Golden State’s 109-100 Game 3 victory over the Mavs at American Airlines Center, the Warriors’ star shooting guard said his team has the upper hand when it comes to who will win the championship this season out of the remaining NBA playoff teams.

“Yeah, I’m not going to say anybody else, and I’m pretty sure that we have home court if we were to win the next game, come the Finals,” Thompson told a reporter who asked if he believes the Dubs are the title favorites. “So we’ve got championship DNA and we have got some great young talent, and we are just meshing at the right time.”

Thompson boldly proclaimed back in November that the 2021-22 Warriors were a “championship or bust” team, and now they are just five wins away from giving the Splash Brother a post-basketball career opportunity as a fortune teller.

Steph Curry said he would love to make Thompson a prophet for his November comments following the Warriors' Game 1 win, but on Sunday night, he didn't want to get too far ahead of himself.

"I'm not going to fast forward. We're playing great basketball right now," Curry told reporters after the game when asked if Golden State is ready to win a championship. "We can play better, but we're finding ways to win games. That's how you piece this thing together. There's no expectation other than what's the challenge ahead of us, and the challenge now is to close out a series against a really good team to get back to an opportunity to win the Finals.

"Like if you asked us -- we talked about it when the playoffs started. Like we had high hopes, and we still do, to win a championship, but we had no idea what it was going to look like. Our goal was to keep getting better as the playoffs went through because we were so far from our peak with everything going into how the season ended."

While he didn't go so far as to name his team the favorite, it's clear Curry believes wholeheartedly in Golden State's current group.

"That's not lost on us, but it's exciting," he continued. "We have an amazing opportunity on Tuesday to come out of the West."

Should the Warriors advance to the Finals, Thompson's triumphant comeback to the court this season after missing nearly 31 months of action thanks to injury could be made all the more sweeter.

And if they win another title?

Go ahead and add a fulfilled prophecy -- and another trophy -- to Thompson's accolades.
