Kerr provides update on Klay, Iguodala’s season-opener status originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Warriors' 2022-23 NBA regular-season opener is only one week away, and a number of question marks still are hovering over the reigning champions. The good news is Klay Thompson took a big step forward Tuesday as he looks to be ready to roll on Oct. 18 at Chase Center against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Thompson scrimmaged for the first time since the Warriors beat the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals nearly four months ago. He will not be available Tuesday night in the Warriors' preseason contest vs. the Portland Trail Blazers, but the hope is Thompson will play Friday night in Golden State's preseason finale against the Denver Nuggets.

That would set him up to be ready to celebrate his fourth championship ring, and presumably, return to the Warriors' starting lineup. Though he made his comeback in January of last season after missing the previous two seasons to a torn ACL and a torn Achilles, Thompson has admitted he had a mental block of scrimmaging and playing pickup games over the offseason, setting him back a bit.

"That's what our performance team is about," Kerr said Tuesday before the Warriors' fourth preseason game. "When they saw him the first few days, they quickly realized, you know what, we have to be careful with this.

"The good news is he's had a couple of really good weeks. As I said, he scrimmaged today. He's feeling strong and ready for more, but we'll continue to bring him along carefully and make sure he's ready to go when we put him out there."

While the Warriors have their fingers crossed on Thompson's availability right around the corner, they'll have to continue to wait when it comes to 38-year-old Andre Iguodala.

After an offseason deciding if he would return or play one last season, Iguodala still hasn't scrimmaged yet. It's unknown when he will cross that barrier and be back in action.

"He won't be ready for the first game," Kerr said. "We're going to push that back. Just really look at the big picture. It's an 82-game season, so we want him healthy long term. Given that he needed some time in camp and needs some time to get to where he needs to be, he won't be ready for opening day."

Iguodala was held to only 31 regular-season games last season as he dealt with a plethora of injuries. He also only played in seven of the Warriors' 22 playoff games.

Along with Thompson and Iguodala being unavailable Tuesday night, the Warriors also will be without Steph Curry, Jordan Poole, Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins and Kevon Looney. Their starting five will be Donte DiVincenzo, Moses Moody, Jonathan Kuminga, JaMychal Green and James Wiseman.
