Needing depth in the frontcourt, Kings general manager Monte McNair signed center Hassan Whiteside to a veteran minimum contract on Wednesday. When he finished that transaction, he added a bit of insurance, just in case Whiteside doesn’t work out.

According to a league source, Sacramento signed former San Antonio Spurs center Chimezie Metu to a training camp contract and he’ll compete for a roster spot with the team.

Taken with the No. 49 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, Metu checks in at 6-foot-9, 225 pounds. The 23-year-old has played sparingly in his two seasons in the league, seeing a total of 250 minutes of action over 47 games.

The power forward/center averaged 3.2 points, 1.8 rebounds and 0.3 blocks in 5.8 minutes per game last season with the Spurs.

Metu put up strong numbers in his three collegiate seasons at USC. He’s a low-risk, high-reward addition for Sacramento.
