Welcome to ‘Teen Vogue Tries,’ a series where Teen Vogue editors try out some of the newest releases – from fashion to beauty and beyond – to help you go beyond the hype.
If you have been following Kim Kardashian’s Skims line for a while, chances are you've had your eye on the Skims Cotton Collection more than once. Though relatively new (compared to its shapewear), Skims' Cotton collection is one of the most popular from the brand. It's all over Instagram and, more often than not, sold out — until now.
Skims' Cotton Collection features two sublines: Cotton Jersey and Cotton Rib. They are both lauded as comfortable, everyday classics. While Cotton Jersey features pieces that mold to your figure to offer comfort, Cotton Rib is its more Instagrammable, lounge-appropriate sister (that's equally comfortable). The Cotton Collection is available in five core colors (Bone, Mineral, Kyanite, and Soot) and seven additional seasonal hues like Chocolate, Sedona, Umber, and Rose Clay. All pieces come in sizes XXS—4X.
If you've been meaning to try out some of the cotton pieces first hand, now's the time: Skims had a big restock on September 21 and four Teen Vogue editors got to try some of the most coveted Cotton Jersey pieces to help you make your selection. Here's what we feel you need to know before buying!
Liz Coulbourn — COTTON JERSEY MOCK NECK TANK + COTTON JERSEY CHEEKY TANGA in Medium, Bone
I’m not usually one to spend much money on shapewear or lingerie. Instead, I try to convince myself that more affordable options get the job done, so it’s safe to say I’ve been pretty skeptical about Skims — is it good or just good marketing? Either way, It’s hard to ignore the massive hype surrounding the brand, so I was very excited to try out the Cotton Jersey collection.
This week, I took full advantage of work-from-home and sported the cotton jersey mock neck tank with the cheeky tanga bottoms around my apartment. And I can officially now say I’m the newest member of the Skims fan club. Both the tank and bottoms are buttery soft and super stretchy, something I think we all look for in an undergarment. From what I can tell so far, the material seems durable and ready to withstand my soon-to-be constant wear and dodgy NYC washer/dryer.
Although the tank is a bit on the sheer side, I plan on lounging around in it and, with some nipple pasties or a thin bra, dressing it up and wearing it out on the town. As for the cheeky tangas, both the cut and stretch are perfect examples of what I prefer for my underwear. As someone with larger hips and butt, they hug all the right places, supporting rather than constricting, unlike a lot of other thick-banded panties I've tried. Ignoring my non-existent lingerie budget, I’m now prepared to clear out my current underwear drawer and stock it with only Skims.
Aiyana Ishmael — COTTON JERSEY T-SHIRT + COTTON JERSEY LONG SLEEVE T-SHIRT in 3X, Soot
I’d heard many great reviews about Skims but this was my first time trying a few pieces from the brand and I must admit I now believe the hype. When I took these shirts out of the package, I was very skeptical about the fit because they looked so small. It definitely looked like they were going to be two sizes too small for me. However, once I tried them, I was surprised about how much they actually expanded to then immediately form to fit my body. I also liked how it smoothed out my sides better than most t-shirts do.
Usually, I don’t buy form-fitting t-shirts because I don’t like how they tend to hug my body. I wasn't blessed with an hourglass shape so I make sure all my outfits cinch at the waist to create that look for myself. I have a large chest and broad shoulders so I personally don’t love short-sleeved tees, mainly because I feel like most are cut in a way that accentuates those features. And while I do have long arms, long-sleeved shirts are somehow always a concern, too. However, I didn’t have any issues with the sleeve length of the long-sleeve Skims cotton shirt. It sat perfectly slightly over my wrists, which is my preferred length. While I enjoyed both shirts, I definitely preferred the long-sleeved one and I think it'd be great now that the colder months are approaching.
Another thing: I haven’t worn a bra in two years and refuse to ever go back to wearing one and I'd say the material on the Skims products was perfect for someone who is also anti-bra. The form-fitting material makes it comfortable enough to skip the bra while still having enough support for my chest to feel comfortable.
Ashley Wolfgang — COTTON JERSEY T-SHIRT BODYSUIT in XXS, Soot + COTTON JERSEY MOCK NECK TANK in XXS, Rose Clay
I have been in desperate need of some good basic tops so I was really excited to try out the Skims Cotton Jersey collection now that it's restocking. I was immediately drawn to the ‘90s look of the mock neck tank in Rose Clay. The color is more of a dusty, light rose in person but I didn’t mind that it was slightly lighter. Before trying on the top, I was almost off-put by how small it looked and was worried that I ordered the wrong size, but I was pleased to discover the top stretched to perfectly fit my body. The form-fitting top created a seamless look that pairs well with one of my favorite skirts. Over the course of the day, the top did start to roll up though, which makes me wonder if maybe I did pick a size too small. Overall, I’m excited to wear this top as I start to add layers and transition into fall.
I was also really excited to try the Cotton Jersey T-Shirt Bodysuit. I’ve never tried a bodysuit before, so I was interested to finally see what all the hype was all about. Initial impressions: I love how seamlessly the shirt pairs under anything — from skirts and shorts to even dresses. This really is the perfect shirt! Again, the size felt a little tight at first but it eventually comfortably fitted my body. My only complaint is that the bottom part of the bodysuit does tend to ride up a bit throughout the day, but that isn’t a dealbreaker.
Louisiana Gelpi — COTTON JERSEY SCOOP BRALETTE in S, Bone, COTTON JERSEY FULL BRIEF + COTTON RIB BRIEF in XS, Bone
Right off the bat, I loved the “bone” color of my pieces – I’m not a huge fan of stark whites and like something a little creamy and this was the perfect amount of off-white. This is my first piece of anything from Skims so when I first opened the package, I was really taken aback because these briefs looked like they belonged to a child. They are tiny! Anyway, I stretched out the waistband of the briefs to make sure they were going to fit over my thigh and they sure are stretchy. TL;DR: They are indeed sized for adults and fit perfectly. They’re soooo soft and feel like you’re wearing almost nothing. I will say that they kind of ride up your butt during the day because they are on the thinner side, but nothing too uncomfortable.
I got the bralette in the same material, and they feel like a softer, more substantial version of my favorite bralette. I did a pilates cardio workout in these and my boobs felt alright, so these are up there on my list. Width-wise, I do kind of wish it was a bit smaller at the front. A little lower, I guess, since it feels very covered. But alas, you can’t have it all!! The ribbed high-waisted briefs on the other hand make me look like a walking Skims model, mainly because it is much too small. I do feel and look hot while wearing them though. I got an XS, which is what I wear in the cotton jersey briefs, but I would definitely size up in these. They go past my belly button and are high up on the waist, sucking you right and tight. If I had to pick between the two, I think the regular briefs are more comfortable for everyday wear and I would probably purchase another pair or two!
