Khabib Nurmagomedov, Conor McGregor suspended and fined for UFC 229 post-fight fracas

LAS VEGAS — Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov was fined $500,000 in a unanimous vote of the Nevada Athletic Commission on Tuesday for leaping over the Octagon following a submission victory over Conor McGregor in a lightweight title fight at UFC 229 on Oct. 6 at T-Mobile Arena.

Nurmagomedov was also suspended for nine months, though it will be reduced to six months if he creates an anti-bullying public service announcement. That would mean he’s eligible to return on April 6, which would effectively mean he would miss no fights for his actions given he doesn’t fight more than every six months.

McGregor, who began fighting with Nurmagomedov teammates after seeing Nurmagomedov leap over the cage, was suspended for six months and fined $50,000.

The commission’s vote on the Nurmagomedov suspension was unanimous, 5-0. The McGregor vote was 4-1, with commissioner Staci Alonso dissenting. She voted no because she noted that McGregor was penalized by the commission in 2016 for an incident at a news conference prior to a fight at UFC 202 against Nate Diaz.

In addition, Nurmagomedov cornermen Abubakar Nurmagomedov and Zubaira Tukhogov were fined $25,000 and suspended for a year.
