Kernel softball splits in Aberdeen to open new season

Apr. 2—ABERDEEN — In a season-opening split doubleheader, the Mitchell High School girls softball team went 1-1 at the Aberdeen Dome.

Mitchell lost 16-0 in three innings in the opening game against Sioux Falls Jefferson before bouncing back for a 14-7 win over Aberdeen Central in the second game of the day.

In the first game, the Cavaliers led 3-0 after two innings before Jefferson popped for 13 runs in the inning to force the early end of the game.

Macey Linke had the lone hit for the Kernels and was the losing pitcher, throwing 2 1/3 innings with seven hits and 11 runs allowed and seven walks. Mallory Miedema picked up the final two outs in the third, allowing three hits and six runs. Jefferson's Peyton Krull had a home run and three RBIs, while Rayna Reisdorfer also drove in three runs for the Cavaliers (2-0), who also beat Aberdeen Central 21-0 on the day, and started the season with 37 unanswered runs.

In the finale, Mitchell and Aberdeen Central were tied at 5-all heading to the sixth inning, when the Kernels ripped off nine runs to take command of the game.

Linke had two hits in the inning, including a solo home run to lead off the sixth. Linke had a 3-for-4 hitting day with a home run and two RBIs, while Mady Thompson had two hits and drove in three runs. Delaney Degen had a triple and Matteah Graves had a double and scored four times, while Laila Strawn had two stolen bases.

Rylee Jennings earned the win with six innings pitched, seven hits allowed, five runs (four earned) and struck out nine. Linke threw the final inning with two hits, two unearned runs and a strikeout against the Golden Eagles (0-4).

Mitchell (1-1) is slated to host Sioux Falls Roosevelt in its home opener at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 4 at the Cadwell Sports Complex.
