He's going on five years as Kentucky basketball's coach. He's said a lot of words about the program, his position, his philosophies.
Now John Calipari is writing them down in a book titled "Players First: Success From the Inside Out." It's scheduled to be published in the spring of 2014, coinciding with the end of this upcoming season.
“I’ve been approached many times about doing a book, and I almost always say no, but this one kind of hit home,” Calipari said in a release. “This book gives me the chance to go in-depth about how we do things at Kentucky and why we do what we do.”
It's on a common theme throughout his time at UK -- his players and why he approaches coaching the way he does.
Reads the book description: "Bold, funny, and truthful, like Coach Calipari himself, Players First is truly the first deep reckoning with the meaning of his experiences and the gifts of insight they offer."
It's Calipari's fourth book in his career.
He's writing it with Mike Sokolove, a New York Times Best Seller.
Some excerpts from the excerpt, which you can read here:
"There was a time I coached partly for myself—for status, respect, money, wins. But I don’t do that anymore, either. Good for those coaches who get to seven hundred, eight hundred, or even a thousand wins, but I’m not staying in it that long."
"I’m also a sinner, as we all are. If you come after one of my players, I come after you twice as hard. If you kill one of mine, I burn your village. It’s the Italian in me. I’m not proud of that, but it’s who I am."
