The Kent State men’s golf team will need a rally to claim its sixth consecutive title at the Mid-American Conference Championships.

The Golden Flashes shot 7-over-par 295 in Friday’s opening round at White Eagle Golf Club in Naperville, Ill. They rest in third place, six shots behind leader Eastern Michigan and three in back of second-place Toledo.

Defending MAC medalist Chris Vandette is in position to repeat after shooting 1-under 71, good for third place individually. The Flashes junior trails Cougar Collins of Eastern Michigan by four shots.

Kent State senior Josh Gilkison overcame a double-bogey on the second hole to shoot even-par 72, and is tied for fourth place. Younger brother Jordan Gilkison, a freshman, added a 4-over 76 along with sophomore Luca Civello.

The Flashes did not finish well on Friday, carding six bogeys compared to just one birdie on the final four holes. They will look to change that in today’s second round, which will begin at 7:30 a.m. The final round of the 54-hole event is set for Sunday.
