Kenny Golladay named Giants’ most overvalued player

When the New York Giants signed wide receiver Kenny Golladay last offseason, it led to immediate optimism among fans. Finally, quarterback Daniel Jones had a legitimate No. 1 to throw to.

Unfortunately for the Giants, all of that optimism was washed away in short order. Golladay started the season slow before suffering a Week 5 injury and missing the following three games.

Things never got any better after his return. Golladay finished the season with just 37 receptions (on 76 targets) for 521 yards and no touchdowns.

That’s hardly production worth the four-year, $72 million investment. And that’s also why Patrik Walker of CBS Sports recently named Golladay the Giants’ most overvalued player.

Oof … this isn’t going well for the Giants just yet, now is it? Kenny Golladay was one of the most sought after free agents in 2021, and it was Big Blue who successfully wooed him to their team, but they didn’t get anything close to what they’re paying for in his first campaign in New York. Inconsistency has been one of the biggest clouds surrounding Golladay over the course of his NFL career, having two 1,000-yard seasons on his resume but also [now] three that didn’t come close.

In 14 starts last season, Golladay grabbed only 521 yards with no touchdowns whatsoever, and while you can attribute some of the struggles to the absence of Daniel Jones, you can’t place all of the blame on that or the now-fired Judge, because Golladay is paid to produce … and he didn’t … also evidenced by his career-worst catch rate of 48.7% in Year 1 of a four-year, $72 million contract.

The Giants desperately need Golladay to stay healthy and productive in 2022. Not just because of the money being paid to him, but because other jobs (see: Jones) are on the line.

The good news is the Giants have moved on from the stagnant offense under Joe Judge and Jason Garrett, and should be much more aggressive under Brian Daboll. That plays right into Golladay’s hand.
