Keenum-to-Diggs vs. Music City Miracle: Who ya got?

Welcome to the War Room, where Yahoo Sports’ football minds kick around the topics of the day. We’re still not over the miraculous Minnesota Vikings triumph over the New Orleans Saints, and we’re wondering: how does it compare to another prominent playoff-ending touchdown? We’re speaking, of course, of the 2000 Music City Miracle, where the Tennessee Titans lateraled their way deeper into the playoffs while sending the Buffalo Bills into a spiral from which they only just recovered this year. Great plays, both, but which do you prefer?

The Diggs catch ought to be burned into your brain by now, but if not, there it is above. And for a refresher, let’s take a look back at the Music City Miracle:

Got them both in mind? Good. Now let’s see which one gets the nod from our crew:

Blake Schuster:
Diggs’ TD. From the start of the second half I was just waiting to see just what torture awaited Minnesota fans. When the Saints took the lead it felt preordained. There are many awe-inspiring moments in the NFL these days, but few shocking ones. This was an absolute stunner. (Not to mention the Music City Miracle didn’t have fireworks going off on the touchdown).

Kevin Kaduk:
Diggs. Recency bias? Maybe. But given Minnesota’s record of playoff failures, Marcus Williams’ stunning whiff and keeping the dreams of a Vikings home Super Bowl alive, I’m going with Diggs. (I do, however, reserve the right to edit this to the Titans if the Vikings biff it in Philly next week.)

Frank Schwab:
Music City Miracle gets the slight nod, because of the nature of the play. We’ve seen offensive plays like the one Diggs pulled off, albeit never on the very last play of a playoff game. But a cross-field lateral that gets brought back for a touchdown? That was insane, and since it happened once and coaches are reminded of it at playoff time every season, I doubt we’ll ever see it again.

Brandon Velaski:
Diggs’ TD. Sure, I’m biased, but for all those things to go right for a franchise that generally never gets a moment like that or is on the receiving end of them gives it a slight nod over the Music City Miracle. Diggs was expecting to get hit, then almost fell down and had the wherewithal to look up to see nobody there instead of going out of bounds like he was probably instructed to do.

Jordan Schultz:
Diggs. Vikings fans expect heartbreak because it happens every year. What Diggs did wasn’t just awesome, it was shocking. These things simply do not happen to Minnesota fans. Diggs made an incredible play, and it was the stroke of luck – an awful tackle attempt – that could lead to the Vikings first ever world championship. And on their home field as well!

Jay Busbee:
Gotta go Music City for the degree of difficulty involved in coordinating, orchestrating, and delivering on the play. Though I will surely reverse this call if the Vikings go on to win the Super Bowl. Either way, if you missed these when they were live, you’ve gotta be hating yourself, and if you didn’t stand up and scream in agony/celebration, seek medical help immediately.

That’ll do it for this week! Got a question for our crew to kick around? Email us at jay.busbee@yahoo.com. Enjoy the conference championships!
