Katie Scott, soccer standout from Fairview, prepares for international trip with U.S. team

Katie Scott will be in for a new experience when the United States Women's Under-15 Youth National Team returns to international play this week after a pandemic-related, three-year hiatus.

Scott, a Fairview resident, will play alongside 19 other girls as the U-15 team plays internationally for the first time since 2019, a three-year pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The U-15 team will spend Monday through June 16 overseas. The Americans will take on the Netherlands on Friday in Schalkhaar. After that, they will travel to northwestern Germany on June 1, for a match against the Germans in the border town of Nordhorn.

"I'm really excited," Scott said of her first overseas trip. "I've never done this before."

Scott has made the cut through two different camps to earn her spot on the international roster. She was among 36 players to earn an invitation to a January camp in Chula Vista, California.

Scott received a callback to a March camp as part of a group of 16 players from the original 36. Another 20 were added to the mix to create another group of 36. Scott has survived both rounds of cuts. Now, the international roster stands at 20.

"I've been playing with this team for the past six months," she said Wednesday during a break in her personal training at Erie Premier Sports. "(The first trip), I really got homesick. Going to California, being by myself, it was definitely a struggle. The second time I did it, I definitely felt more comfortable."

A freshman at Fairview High School, Scott did not play for the Tigers in her first year of high school. Instead, she plays for the Internationals Soccer Club, based in Medina, Ohio. The club is considered among the nation's most prestigious at the youth soccer level.

Scott had 26 goals and 18 assists while helping her team to the National quarterfinals in Richmond, Virginia. She was selected as the Ohio Valley Conference U-15 Player of the Year and was an all-OVC, first-team selection.

The U-15 group is coached by Katie Schoepfer, who was a two time All-American at Penn State.

The players on the U-15 WYNT were born on or after Jan. 1, 2007. Nineteen were born in 2007 and one was born in 2008. The 20 girls represent 14 different clubs in 12 different states.
