Kate said that sometimes she feels guilty over having "fun and games" with her family while he is in a "minimally-conscious state", but added that she "needed to keep life going so Derek's got a life to come back to".

Speaking about the challenges Derek was facing, Kate said that he was having difficulty with food especially, but overall "everything" was a challenge for him at the moment.

Adil praised Kate for how she is handing such an awful situation, saying she was a source of strength for people going through all sorts of things, not just COVID-related.

In lighter news, Kate explained this morning how her family paddling pool (which she described as Derek's "pride and joy") split open over the weekend, and flooded her and her neighbour's gardens.

"I spent most of yesterday trying to manually put it back into shape and I've gaffer-taped the side – I'll take a picture of it later so you can see," she told Adil and viewers.

"I haven't filled it up since, I've got to try it today."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
