When the London Design Museum announced finalists for its tenth annual Beazley awards on Wednesday, one name stuck out in the crowd: Kanye West. The rapper-turned-fashion designer nabbed a finalist spot in the fashion category for the merchandise from his Life of Pablo tour. Kanye’s nomination is not entirely unexpected, however, as the awards, which also feature Architecture, Digital, Graphics, and Product categories, have honored pop culture moments in the past, including David Bowie’s Black Star album design.
This year, however, a fair share of the finalist projects are those that address politics in the U.K., U.S., and beyond. In the Fashion category, for one, a nod goes to the now iconic Pussyhat that served as protest symbol following Donald Trump’s election. Similarly, the Graphics category honors the anti-Brexit/pro-E.U. posters and t-shirt designs made by Wolfgang Tillmans and Between Bridges in advance of the country’s referendum. Other honorees include David Adjaye for his Museum of African American History in Washington, D.C., Nike’s Nike Pro Hijab, and IKEA's Wedge Dowel. The museum will host an exhibition of the finalist designs starting in October set to coincide with a public vote online that will ultimately determine this year’s winning designer.
