Kansas City Chiefs reportedly have strong interest in defensive end Whitney Mercilus

The Chiefs are last in the NFL with seven sacks this season, and they reportedly are looking for help with their pass rush.

Pro Football Focus’ Brad Spielberger tweeted this Monday: “Hearing the Kansas City Chiefs are currently exploring options to add along the defensive line.”

The Chiefs may have set their sights on defensive end Whitney Mercilus.

Aaron Wilson of Sports Talk 790 and ESPN’s Sarah Barshop both reported the Texans’ plan to release Mercilus.

A short while later, Mercilus wrote a farewell message to Texans fans on Instagram.

Wilson said the Chiefs and Mercilus have mutual interest.

Mercilus, 31, has three sacks this season and 57 in his 10 seasons in the NFL, all with the Texans.

This is the first season Mercilus has played defensive end after spending his first nine seasons at outside linebacker.

“It’s been a little different, I’ll tell you that,” Mercilus told reporters last month. “Because now it’s like my keys are shortened down to just reading tackles and tight ends and pre-snap reads, so I can’t see anything that’s post-snap or when motions happen, stuff like that, to get a beat on what might happen, things like that.

“It’s just reading my keys more so and locking in on that, and just letting instinct take over.”
