Kannapolis approves new agreement for long-planned U.S. Performance Center project

A key piece in the remake of downtown Kannapolis appears to be moving closer to reality after years of being stuck in the planning stages.

On Monday, Kannapolis City Council approved a new agreement for the proposed U.S. Performance Center project. The amended deal includes a land purchase agreement that could see the U.S. Performance Center acquire multiple properties at and around downtown Kannapolis. The city initially approved incentives in 2019 for the U.S. Performance Center to relocate there from its home in Charlotte.

The U.S. Performance Center focuses on research for athletic development and health and wellness. A Kannapolis news release states the U.S. Performance Center project in Kannapolis “would include utilizing technology, athletic fields, and research to provide testing and training for athletes, developmental programs for coaches and youth, sports medicine rehab, tournaments for youth and developing athletes and more.”

The amended agreement approved on Monday allows the U.S. Performance Center to purchase a 24-acre, city-owned property on Eighth Street near the N.C. Research Campus. Under the agreement, the U.S. Performance Center would pay $755,862.66 for the property, which would likely be used for athletic fields.

The new agreement also includes an option to purchase the remainder of the former Cannon Mills Plant 4 site in downtown.
