Texas Tech's football recruiting class for 2023 added a marquee piece Saturday when Justin Northwest quarterback Jake Strong committed to the Red Raiders.

Strong, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound junior, threw for 2,339 yards and 29 touchdowns this season and ran for 918 yards and eight TDs. Northwest finished 7-4 with a bi-district loss in the Class 5A Division I playoffs. The Texans scored more than 40 points in six games, including five games in a row from late September to late October.

Strong completed 182 of 308 passes and was intercepted 12 times. He had four games of at least 100 yards rushing.

The Texans and Strong had nearly identical seasons the year before as Strong threw for 2,223 yards and 28 touchdowns his sophomore year and ran for 520 yards and seven TDs. Northwest also was 7-4 that season, and Strong was the District 3-5A Division I newcomer of the year.

Eight other programs have offered Strong a scholarship, according to Rivals recruiting service, Cincinnati and Indiana being the most prominent among them. Western Kentucky also offered Strong a scholarship when new Tech offensive coordinator Zach Kittley had the same position at WKU.

Strong announced his pledge on social media. He is the sixth high-school junior to commit to the Red Raiders.
