Julio Jones explains why he chose new number after being traded to Titans

Why did Julio Jones pick No. 2 to be his uniform number with the Tennessee Titans?

The decision came about while at dinner with new teammate A.J. Brown, Jones told reporters Thursday – and the selection symbolizes the Titans’ new dynamic trio on offense.

“I really just picked it,” Jones said after Thursday’s offseason practice, his first with the Titans. “Me and A.J., we were pretty much at dinner and just talking. He tried to give me (No.) 11. But I said, ‘I don’t want it. That’s your number.’ So I was going to go with the (No.) 2.

“The (No.) 2, one plus one is two. Then two times 11 is 22 (Derrick Henry’s number). So it’s kind of like you going to have to deal with us.

“All four of us actually,” Jones continued, referring to quarterback Ryan Tannehill. “But you’re going to have to deal with the whole offense. It takes all 11 guys. It’s just something to keep the guys going and have fun with it because at the end of the day, it’s our job to have fun with it.”

With Jones in the fold, the Titans have arguably the best trio of rushing and pass catching in the league – Jones, Henry and Brown – and an offense that could be a quandary for even the NFL’s best defenses. Jones said it’s “pick your poison” with Tennessee’s threats at receiver and in the backfield.

Before joining Tennessee, Jones wore No. 11 for the decade he spent with the Falcons, establishing himself as arguably the best receiver of his generation.

Brown had announced earlier this week on Twitter that Jones turned down No. 11 so his new teammate could keep his number.

Before choosing No. 2, Nos. 8 and 82 had been seen as options for Jones. He wore No. 8 at Alabama and No. 82 at Foley High School in Alabama.
