Jordon Johnson, Nicholai Arbach combine for six-hit shutout to lead District 1B champions

MITCHELL — Jordon Johnson and Nicholai Arbach combijned on a six-hit shutout to lead the District 1 champion Lake Norden Lakers to a 1-0 win over Flandreau during opening-night play in the South Dakota State Class B Amateur Baseball tournament.

The Lennox Only One Alpacas opened the tourney with a 12-3 win over the Milbank Firechiefs, another District 1 team. Lennox trailed 3-1 before scoring 11 runs in the fifth inning.

Johnson got the win for Lake Norden with seven shutout innings. He allowed six hits and struck out seven. Arbach pitched two hitless innings for the save.

After Flandreau used two walks and had runners on second and third with one out in the top of the ninth, Arbach fanned the final two batters.

Lake Norden (18-3) scored the game's only run in the fourth when Jackson Noem was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Josh Cleveland. Mitchell Noem added a triple and Jesse VanOverbeke a single for Lake Norden's only three hits.

Calvin Hegg and Jacob VonBerge had two hits apiece for Flandreau. Bret Severtson went the distance in the loss, striking out eight in eight innings.

A three-run homer by Matt Storo and a botched fly ball that emptied the bases sparked Lennox's big inning. Kyle Braun, Marcus VanDriel and Kyle Tuschen joined Storo with two hits. Drew Sweeter added a double.

JD Kirchner got the win with six innings of relief that included three hits allowed and nine strikeouts.

Kellen Hoeke had a two-run single for Milbank (12-10), which also scored on a groundout by Dom Boerger. Mitch Quade and Taylor Boerger each finished with two hits. Boerger took the loss on the mound.

Lake Norden and Lennox will meet in a second-round game at 5:30 p.m. Sunday in the tourney, which continues through Sunday, Aug. 13.

Central Plains American Legion Baseball Regional

RAPID CITY — Host Rapid City Post 22 won and state Class A champion Harrisburg Gold lost during opening-round games in the double-elimination tournament on Wednesday.

Post 22 (48-23) closed out the day with a 9-5 win over Elkhorn-Waterloo (Neb.), taking advantage of a five-run third inning. Harrison Goood and Alex Dietrich each had two hits and two RBIs.

Harrisburg (25-14) fell 4-0 to the St. Michael (Minn.) Mikes. Ashtyn Groves scattered four hits and struck out eight over six innings and Mason Varley went 3-for-3 with two RBIs for St. Michael.

In other games, Fargo (N.D.) Post 2 beat Eden Prairie (Minn.) 6-2 and Lincoln (Neb.) topped Williston (N.D.) 10-5.

The tourney continues through Sunday.
