Bad news for Jordan Spieth: the pursuit of the career Grand Slam is going to have to wait another year, barring a miracle. Another 12th hole in a major, another debacle.

Spieth was at -7, four strokes back of the leaders, when he stepped to the 12th tee … and promptly fired his tee shot into the trees. Not great. With the out-of-bounds line lying close, Spieth hit a provisional ball and went to search for his first.

He found it, nestled deep in the trees, and attempted a punch-out:

Bad news. The shot rebounded off the “Y” of the tree above and shot out of bounds. Spieth hit a second provisional, this time with the penalty stroke, and ended up short of the green. Several shots later, he was in with a triple-bogey 7 that dropped him outside the top 25.

Shame, too; Spieth had been rolling. While catching Brooks Koepka and Gary Woodland would have been a challenge, Spieth had the chance to make a bit of history. Spieth had already won the Masters (2015), the U.S. Open (2015) and the British Open (2017). He was hoping to become only the seventh player to achieve the career Grand Slam, winning all four majors over the course of a career. He would have joined Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Gene Sarazen, Gary Player, Ben Hogan and Tiger Woods as the only players ever to achieve the feat.  Now it’ll wait until next May, at least.
