Johnson County baseball teams begin district play

Mar. 15—Johnson County baseball teams recently began district play following a pre-district slate of tournaments to prepare for league competition.

The Cleburne Yellow Jackets baseball team has its sights set on a second postseason appearance in three seasons and currently sit atop the District 8-5A Region I standings. Most recently, Cleburne (12-7, 4-0) swept its opening home-and-home district series this past week with Seguin, winning 18-0 at home and 13-0 in Seguin. The Jackets also had a home game against Granbury and will compete again at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Joshua (10-6-2, 2-2), who dropped home (10-5) and road contests (13-3) against Mansfield Timberview this past week.

Meanwhile, the Centennial Spartans (10-9, 2-0) and Burleson Elks (6-11, 0-4) also began District 8-5A competition this past week. The Spartans, who picked up a pair of wins over Burleson earlier in the season, competed at home against Midlothian Heritage before their next district series, which will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home against Mansfield Summit before the teams square off again Friday night in Mansfield. The Elks faced Summit before beginning their next home-and-home district series against Mansfield Timberview. The first game will be played at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Burleson with the following tilt happening at the same time in Mansfield on Friday night.

In Class 4A, the Godley Wildcats and Alvarado Indians of District 10-4A Region II will begin their district slates Tuesday night. The Wildcats (8-5-2) will host Kennedale at 7 p.m. Tuesday night before the rematch in Kennedale at the same time Friday night. The Indians (11-3) will open up a home-and-home series with Waxahachie Life at 4 p.m. Tuesday with the following game taking place at 7 p.m. Friday at Waxahachie Life.

The Grandview Zebras of Class 3A (8-3-1) resumed its pre-district schedule with a Saturday home contest against Decatur ahead of their first district series of the season. Grandview will host Whitney at 7 p.m. Tuesday before playing at the Wildcats' home stadium 7 p.m. Friday night while the Keene Chargers (1-9) will begin their first district series against Clifton. The Chargers will host the Cubs at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night before the teams play again at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Clifton.

The Rio Vista Eagles in Class 2A (7-5) will host Moody at 7 p.m. Tuesday night with district competition looming. The Eagles' first league competition will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, at home against Itasca.
