Joel Klatt shares his top-ten after a wild first week of college football
Each week we like to check in with Fox college football analyst Joel Klatt to see where he ranks the top teams in the country. After a wild first week, there will definitely be some shake-up in the polls.
Klatt had both LSU and Clemson in his pre-season top-ten. But after the Bayou Bengals got dismantled by Florida State and Dabo’s Tigers were embarrassed by Duke, both have dropped off that list. Maybe Ohio State fans shouldn’t be too upset about a 20-point road win against a “basketball” school. Clearly, it could’ve been worse.
Some teams looked really good and some looked like they were replacing three starters on the offensive line and a two-time Heisman finalist. That’s why we like Joel Klatt. He does an excellent job of taking a look at the big picture while evaluating what’s happening in the present.
So let’s get to it. Who are Joel Klatt’s top ten teams and where does he have Ohio State after an underwhelming win over Indiana?
Tennessee Volunteers
What we think
Tennessee is coming off an outstanding 2022 campaign. However, replacing Hendon Hooker with the big arm of Joe Milton leaves many questions. The Vols took care of lowly Virginia at home exactly as they should have. A matchup with FCS Austin Peay won’t tell us much more.
Utah Utes
What we think
Kyle Whittingham is one of the most likable guys in all of college football. After dismantling the Florida Gators and the mighty SEC in Thursday night action, how could you not like him even more? The Utes have a really good football team and have a ton of experience. They get Baylor next week who just fell to Texas State.
USC Trojans
What we think
As long as USC has a healthy Caleb Williams it has a chance against any team in the country. But that defense remains a liability. If Williams has an off day, the Trojans will be in trouble.
Washington Huskies
What we think
Michael Penix Jr. is really good at football. Ohio State fans might remember Penix when he played for Indiana in 2020 and almost knocked off the Justin Fields led Buckeyes. Washington handled Boise State with ease on Saturday and gets Tulsa this week. Should be more of the same.
Penn State Nittany Lions
What we think
The Drew Allar era has officially begun in State College. Allar was impressive in Penn State‘s opener over West Virginia throwing for 325 yards and three touchdowns. Add in elite running backs, an excellent offensive line, and more than capable defense, and the Nittany Lions could make some noise in the Big Ten and national landscape.
Ohio State Buckeyes
What we think
Maybe expectations were a little high coming into the first game of the season. Ohio State will be fine. The Buckeyes are loaded with talent at all positions. The offensive line remains the biggest question, but with a few warmup games to gel before Notre Dame, we think it should get its act together and work out the kinks.
Florida State Seminoles
What we think
Are the ‘Noles back? It sure looked that way on Sunday night when Florida State put a whoppin’ on Brian Kelly and LSU. Jordan Travis certainly looks like a Heisman contender and that defense was flying around like a Seminole D from the 90’s. Time will tell, but FSU looks like a legit contender.
Alabama Crimson Tide
What we think
In the Nick Saban era, Alabama just reloads. However, the Crimson Tide lost a lot of talent last year and there seems to be more questions this time around than in years past. However, that offensive line is massive and there’s still have a great defense in tow. The Tide hosts Texas this week and that should give us a better picture of who ‘Bama truly is.
Michigan Wolverines
What we think
It’s interesting that Michigan‘s numbers against East Carolina were very similar to Ohio State vs. Indiana and the national narrative seemed to be the Buckeyes are overrated and the Wolverines are title contenders. Michigan is good, there is no doubt, but it won’t play a quality opponent until November when it travels to Penn State.
Georgia Bulldogs
What we think
The defending champs got off to a slow start but ended up rolling past Tennessee-Martin. Georgia is replacing a ton of talent but has a wealth of talent coming back. The Bulldogs should continue to roll this week when they face MAC opponent Ball State.
