JMA girls win battle of the Lady Trojans

Jan. 12—There was a lid on the bucket to start the region opener between the John Milledge and Tattnall Square girls Tuesday.

The two teams sat scoreless for over five and a half minutes of game time. The visiting Lady Trojans from Macon struck first when the JMA defense left the back door open, but the host Lady Trojans answered back quickly via 3-pointer off the fingertips of Maggie Prestwood with just under two minutes to play. That was a sight Tattnall had to get used to Tuesday as the senior point guard Prestwood finished with a game-high 20 points, 18 of which came from three. The outstanding shooting performance helped the John Milledge girls remain undefeated heading into the weekend as they won 46-36.

After the slow start by both teams, the first quarter ended with JMA up just 6-2. Head coach Jeremy Mayweather's girls starting finding their rhythm in the second. Good ball movement resulted in a Calah Foston 3 at the top of the key midway through the period. Prestwood knocked down a couple more from deep to stretch John Milledge's lead to 20-7 at the break.

Tattnall could not match John Milledge shot-for-shot. The visitors' best hope was to win inside on the offensive end and hope the home team's hand cooled. The margin closed to 10 by third quarter's end, but the Macon school never threatened much more past that. JMA junior Lucy Elliott had a good stretch early in the fourth with a made 3 from the right wing. She followed that up with an offensive rebound and then looked to the outside where she found Prestwood, who in turn found senior Allie Osborne open on the back side for what became a 3-point play the hard way. Osborne ended up with 11 points on the night along with a strong defensive performance where she either blocked or altered Tattnall shots down in the low post.

The win advanced John Milledge to 10-0 on the season heading into some solid weekend competition against FPD Friday and Deerfield-Windsor Saturday.
