JJ Redick got 'polite booing' during preseason game in China after apparent racial slur use
Chinese fans booed Philadelphia guard JJ Redick every time he touched the ball on Friday during the 76ers’ preseason game against the Dallas Mavericks at Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai, China.
Earlier this year, Redick appeared in a video with numerous other NBA stars wishing China a happy new year. A clip of Redick, though, appeared to feature a racial slur. He apologized almost instantly, and claimed he was tongue tied and stumbled over his words.
It wasn’t all hate that Redick received on Friday, though. The 34-year-old generated significant applause throughout the contest, where he went 10-of-10 from the field — including a perfect 7-of-7 from behind the arc — for 28 points in Philadelphia’s 120-114 win over Dallas.
“It was the most polite booing that I’ve ever received in my life,” Redick told ESPN. “I mean, they booed and they cheered. It was like, ‘We’re mad at you, but we appreciate the way you shoot a basketball.'”
Redick said the booing didn’t give him any extra motivation on Friday, just that he had simply found his groove on the court.
Redick, who is entering his 13th season in the NBA, apologized again on Friday and said that he expected some hate from fans during the trip.
“The whole thing, it was a very unfortunate situation,” Redick told ESPN. “I’m just deeply, deeply remorseful for offending so many people.”
