Jimmy Butler's number in Miami is an homage to former Bulls teammate Taj Gibson

Jimmy Butler and Taj Gibson were teammates with the Bulls for more than five and a half seasons and then another year-plus with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

In that time they made the playoffs together six times. They've been through a lot as teammates.

It's not such a surprise then that Butler's current number with the Miami Heat, 22, is to honor Gibson. Gibson wore 22 throughout his tenure with the Bulls and in his partial season with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

When Gibson and Butler reunited in Minnesota, Gibson went with 67, which he has now with the New York Knicks.

Butler wore 21 in his time with the Bulls before switching to 23 in Minnesota and Philadelphia. After signing with Miami as a free agent this offseason, Butler made the move to 22. No. 23 is retired for Michael Jordan in Miami, but 21 is available. He could have gone with something familiar, but instead went right in between to match Gibson's old number.
