Jimmies women's hoops upset No. 10 Briar Cliff 73-68

Jan. 17—SIOUX CITY, Iowa. — The University of Jamestown women's basketball team fought off a furious comeback from No. 10-ranked Briar Cliff University as they got a 73-68 win on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at the Chargers' Newman Flanagan Center.

Before the game had even been tipped off, the Chargers (12-4, 7-3) got called for a technical foul, sending the Jimmies' Kate Cordes to the line where she hit a free throw to put her team up 1-0. Once the game officially started, the Jimmies were able to carry that to an early 9-2 lead. The Chargers responded with a run to cut the deficit to 9-7 before another Jimmies run saw them stretch the lead out to 22-12 heading into the second quarter.

The Jimmies (9-8, 4-5) were able to push their lead out even further in the second quarter taking a 40-27 lead when Kia Tower converted an and-one to take a 40-27 lead with 14 seconds to go in the opening half.

The Chargers showed why they are a top ten team in the country in the third quarter as they cut their deficit down to eight points on two separate occasions with the final one coming on a Rachel Langel jumper with 1:11 to go in the third to cut the Jimmies lead down to 53-45. The teams traded points back and forth in the fourth quarter as the Jimmies' largest lead of the frame was nine points and the Chargers' smallest deficit was three points on two separate occasions. The Jimmies were able to wilt the game away at the line though as they hit their last five free throws in a row to hang on to the win.

After having six turnovers in the first half, the Chargers forced the Jimmies into 11 turnovers in the second half.

The win sees the Jimmies get their third win over a ranked opponent this season.

The Jimmies return to the court at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 19, when they go to the College of Saint Mary.
