Jimmies women's hoops lose 85-73 at Briar Cliff

Feb. 28—SIOUX CITY, Iowa. — The University of Jamestown women's basketball team struggled defensively in an 85-73 loss to Briar Cliff University on Wednesday, Feb. 28, at the Chargers' Newman Flanagan Center.

The Jimmies started the game on fire as they got out to a quick 9-3 lead before the Chargers fought back to tie the game up at 13. The teams continued to fight through the remainder of the first quarter as the Chargers took a 25-23 lead into the second quarter.

"I thought offensively our ball movement in the first six possesions was really good," Jimmies head coach Thad Sankey said. "We were able to pass, we were able to get some player movement. We played through some actions that we had prepped and countered really well. So, I thought that was a big factor and the other part is we got some defensive stops early, we forced some tough shots, we defensive rebounded right off the bat and got us started."

The Chargers (21-8) hit a three early in the second quarter to take a 28-23 lead and that kickstarted a 10-4 run over the first five minutes of the second to push the lead out to 38-27. After the Chargers took a 47-39 lead, the Jimmies' Samantha Paulsen splashed a three at the halftime buzzer to cut the deficit to 47-42.

The Jimmies (17-12) started the second half slowly missing their first three shots before Audrey Rodakowski ended the run with a jumper to cut the deficit to 57-44. The Jimmies were able to bring their deficit back to single digits at 63-55 with 2:24 to go in the third but that was as close as they would get over the remainder of the third as they trailed 66-55 heading into the fourth.

Early in the fourth, the Jimmies cut it to single digits once again at 66-57 but the Chargers' Konnor Sudmann responded with a jumper to push the lead out to 68-57. The Chargers were able to continue to push their lead out from there getting a 12 point win.

The Jimmies will now have to wait until 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, to see if they get into the NAIA National Tournament.
