Jimmies softball gets doubleheader sweep over Briar Cliff

Mar. 21—SIOUX CITY, Iowa. — The University of Jamestown softball team exploded for nine runs in the fifth inning to get a 13-1 win over Briar Cliff University on Thursday, March 21, at the Chargers' Bishop Mueller Complex.

The Chargers struck first in the third inning before the Jimmies came up to bat in the fourth. The Jimmies' Maddie Spaeth hit a two-run double to push her team in front 2-1 before a two-run home run made it a 4-1 game.

The Jimmies put the game away in the fifth inning. The Jimmies opened the inning with back-to-back home runs from Kayla Quintanilla and Mackenzie Lefebvre, respectively, to push the lead out to 6-1. The Jimmies added seven more runs in the frame to get a 13-1 win.

The Jimmies completed the doubleheader sweep in game two with an 8-5 win over the Chargers.

The Jimmies (17-5, 2-0) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning before the Chargers responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-2 lead. The Chargers (12-11, 0-2) were able to stretch the lead out to 4-2 before the Jimmies blew the game open in the fourth inning. The Jimmies' Gregg continued her big day with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-3 and then later in the frame, Hope Ransome reached on an error to score two runs to push the Jimmies in front 5-4. The Jimmies added another run in the frame and two more in the fifth to take an 8-4 lead.

The Chargers scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback.

The Jimmies return to the field at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, when they host Mount Marty.
