Jimmies men's volleyball sweeps UC Merced at home

Feb. 3—JAMESTOWN — The University of Jamestown started their Saturday off right as they swept the University of California-Merced (25-14, 25-15, 25-20) on Saturday, Feb. 3, at Harold Newman Arena.

The start of the first set was tight as the Jimmies were up 13-8 before a kill from Caylor Cox pushed the lead out to 14-8. That started a run that saw the Jimmies stretch the lead out to 19-10, drawing a Bobcats timeout. Out of the timeout, the Jimmies kept it up getting another kill to push the lead out to 20-10 before the Bobcats (1-5) got a kill to cut the deficit to 20-11. That did little to slow the home team down, though, as they got a 25-14 first-set win.

The beginning of the second set was again tight as the Jimmies were up 10-9. However, a 5-0 run would see the Jimmies pull away with a 15-9 lead. The Jimmies (6-0) kept it up from there getting a 25-15 second-set win.

Unlike the first two sets, the Jimmies sprinted out of the gates to a 9-3 lead and kept it going, eventually taking a 17-12 lead. That was when it got tight, though, as the Bobcats were able to fight all the way back to cut their deficit to 24-20. The Jimmies would not be denied, getting a kill from Matthew Wagner to give his team the 25-20 third-set win.

The match was the second in the last three days between the two teams after the Jimmies swept the Bobcats on Feb. 1.

"By playing that match Thursday, we got a chance to see them up front so we made some adjustments on defense," Jimmies head coach Travers Cox said. "When I can make adjustments on defense, we're gonna be tough as we showed."

The win pushes the Jimmies' record to 30-0 all time at Harold Newman Arena.

"That's a credit to the players that have been here," Cox said. "That's a credit to them."
