Jimmies men's hockey wins, women's hockey loses

Feb. 17—MANDAN, N.D. — The University of Jamestown men's hockey team started their attempts to repeat as Midwest College Hockey tournament champions with a 5-1 win over Midland University on Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Starion Sports Complex.

The Jimmies (23-8) opened the scoring at the 9:07 mark of the first period when Brad Fortin scored to make it 1-0. The score stayed that way until the 10:27 mark of the season period when Fortin scored his 22nd goal of the season, giving him the new single-season Jimmies goals record. Approximately five minutes later, the Jimmies' Logan Berggren scored to make it 3-0 before the Jimmies added another one in the frame to go into the third up 4-0.

Just under three minutes into the third period, the Jimmies' Reid Wilson scored his second of the day to push the lead out to 5-0 before the Warriors (12-21) got one back to cut the deficit to 5-1.

The Jimmies return to the ice at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18, when they take on the University of Mary in the Midwest College Hockey Championship Game.

MINOT, N.D. — The University of Jamestown gave up three consecutive goals to lose 3-1 to Minot State University on Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Beavers' Maysa Arena.

The Jimmies' (13-16, 5-15) Crystal Wale opened the scoring at the 1:26 mark to make it 1-0 before the Beavers responded to tie the game up at one. The score stayed that way until the Beavers' Makena Welby scored her second of the day to take a 2-1 lead. The Beavers (20-10-1) kept it up from there, scoring to make it 3-1 late in the second period.

The Jimmies are back in action on Thursday, Feb. 22, when they take part in the Women's Midwest College Hockey tournament.
