Jets QB Sam Darnold had the bye week to give his injured shoulder some extra rest, but he will not be returning for Week 11 when the Jets face the Los Angeles Chargers, head coach Adam Gase said on Monday.
"I think it’s a smart decision not to play," Darnold said. "It’s just got to heal. It’s got to have time. That was kind of our mindset."
With Darnold out, Joe Flacco will start again for the 0-9 Jets.
Darnold said that part of his decision to not play has to do with his longevity and the fear of a potential re-injury.
"After (weighing) that, I thought it was the best decision not to play this week," he said.
As far as how confident he is that he'll return this season?
"Very confident," Darnold said. "I’m very confident that I’ll play again this year. For me it’s just making sure that when I do come back I’m 100 percent, so that when I do land on it or get hit it’s not getting reinjured."
Darnold has played in six games this season, and the Jets could be facing a franchise-altering decision after the season if they're still in position to draft Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence.
