Wednesday was the second first day of school with the New York Jets for defensive lineman Carl Lawson.

But the hope is for class to end on a much better note in 2022.

The team began training camp in Florham Park this week. Lawson was back out with his teammates for the workouts which came after last year’s camp came crashing down.

And from the sounds of it, Lawson is looking right at home again.

Upon seeing Lawson return, New York head coach Robert Saleh was thoroughly impressed.

“Carl, he’s a freak,” Saleh said via press conference while knocking on wood. “His work ethic–I’m telling you, he was ready to practice in OTAs. It’s just, we have to protect Carl from Carl in terms of the amount of work he’s going to do because he won’t stop.”

The last time the Jets saw Lawson full go, he ended up injuring his Achilles. It kept him out his entire first season in New York in 2021.

It had long been reported that the pass rusher would be ready by the regular season–naturally training camp’s start is even better.

Now back and healthy after being removed from the team’s PUP list, Lawson is taking any positives he can from his extensive rehab he had to do. It was a long past year for him.

“You grow stronger from it, but of course it was tough. It was ridiculously tough,” Lawson said via video conference. “I knew I was going to come out on top.”

The Jets would have preferred Lawson hit the field in 2021, but they’ll certainly take his current mindset as all parties involved look forward to him making his Gang Green debut.
