When Jeremy Lin officially joined the Lakers, he told the media gathered at his press conference, "I'm not trying to recreate a 'Linsanity.' I'm not trying to be that phenomenon that happened in New York. I think I just want to be myself more than ever." And Jeremy Lin being himself is pretty cool, too.
While his performance has diminished on the court since that magical month in Feburary 2012, Lin's global popularity remains intact thanks to a social media game rivaled by few NBA players — save for maybe Joel Embiid. Last year, he hosted his own Fan Appreciation Week, simultaneously thanking the Lin faithful and building his network across all social media channels. This year, he's doing the same.
The week started with a Facebook caption contest and a quiz posted on Twitter, but an otherwise uneventful few days got a whole lot more exciting when he announced a dunk contest with an impressive display of mini basketball dunks on a trio of unsuspecting foes by way of Instagram.
Day 3 of Fan Appreciation Week! Who can come up with the best #JLinDunkCam video?!? All submissions will be judged on creativity, execution and post-dunk celebration lol. You MUST use #JLinDunkCam so we can find the video and post by midnight pst today. PLEASE be safe! My video will give you guys a few ideas (no need to use a real mini-bball/hoop...all props work too) #JLinDunkCam #sorrymom #takenoprisoners
Lin's first two victims remain anonymous, but the third appears to be his mother Shirley, whose reaction to a dunk orchestrated by Lin and (we assume) his brothers is an appropriate blend of terror and appreciation. The backboard-shaking celebration alone deserves a few more looks inside the Lin household.
Good times. Let's keep them rolling.
This self-deprecating "Jeremy Lin Goes Hollywood" video posted on yet another of his social media channels wasn't bad, either. "Is it Linsanity? More like Trash Can-ity. Why don't you stop making YouTube videos and get a life, loser?" Not a bad way to put the past few years behind him.
