Jennifer Lopez said 2 Super Bowl headliners was 'worst idea in the world'

The Jennifer Lopez and Shakira Super Bowl halftime show was widely praised, but still had its detractors. That group apparently included Jennifer Lopez.

Two years after taking the stage at Super Bowl LIV, the multi-platinum pop star debuted "Halftime," a documentary about her career that revealed some behind-the-scenes frustrations in the run-up to the big show.

Per Entertainment Weekly, the documentary captures Lopez mapping out the show with music director Kim Burse when she starts laying into the basic idea of using co-headliners for the halftime show:

"We have six f—ing minutes. We have 30 seconds of a song, and if we take a minute, that's it, we've got five left. But, there's got to be certain songs that we sing, though. We have to have our singing moments. It's not going to be a dance f—ing revue. We have to sing our message," Lopez tells Burse. "This is the worst idea in the world to have two people do the Super Bowl. It was the worst idea in the world."

Later, Lopez reportedly discusses the production with Shakira and suggests dividing the show in half, which the pair ended up doing. Lopez suggests 20 minutes would have been more appropriate for a show with two headlines:

"I know that the Super Bowl people want us to be weaved throughout the show. I haven't had a confirmation about how many minutes I'm going to have," Shakira tells Lopez, who responds: "Let me address that really quick. They said 12 minutes. I got kind of a good confirmation that we could have an extra minute or two, so now we're at, like, 13, 14 minutes. I think, Shakira, what we should have is you should have half the time and I should [have half]."

"If it was going to be a double-headliner, they should have given us 20 minutes," Lopez finishes. "That's what they should've f—ing done."

Despite those complaints, the show ended up coming out great by most accounts. You can watch the whole thing here:

Shakira and Jennifer Lopez's Super Bowl LIV halftime show set list

When you look at the actual set list for the show, you can kind of see where Lopez is coming from. Keep in mind, they did all of this in 14 minutes:

  • She Wolf

  • Empire

  • Ojos Aji

  • Whenever, Wherever

  • I Like It

  • Chantaje

  • Hips Don't Lie

  • Jenny From the Block

  • Ain't It Funny

  • Get Right

  • Waiting For Tonight

  • Booty

  • Mi Gente

  • On the Floor

  • Let's Get Loud

  • Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)

Despite Lopez's frustrations with a two-headliner show, the NFL apparently didn't think there was much of a problem considering it booked five headliners for the Super Bowl LIV halftime show two years later.
