SNY's Jeane Coakley celebrates New York Yankees Opening Day by quizzing fans on their Yankees Opening Day knowledge
Becton is 6-feet-7 and 370 pounds and the image next to Crowder, a wide receiver, is nothing short of astounding. Check out the image that is going viral: It looks like Becton, who played college ball at Louisville, is standing next to someone on a Pop Warner team, not an NFL wideout. I was definitely insecure growing up,” Becton told ESPN last week.
Marcus Morris either committed a cardinal basketball sin or had very unfortunate foot placement Tuesday night. In the third quarter of the Los Angeles Clippers' first-round Game 5 matchup with the Mavericks, Morris ran over to defend Luka Doncic prior to an inbound pass and stepped on the Dallas star's ankle. No one is allowed to say "Should the Mavs sign Marcus Morris" anymore.
A candidate in the Barcelona presidential race and former club director has accused Lionel Messi of a lack respect following the forward's announcement of his desire to leave the Nou Camp. Barca captain Messi made clear on Tuesday his wish to move on from the La Liga side, with the club already in turmoil after their 8-2 Champions League defeat by Bayern Munich. Since that result, coach Quique Setien has been replaced by Ronald Koeman while sporting director Eric Abidal has also been sacked.
Phil Mickelson is putting on a show this week in his PGA Tour Champions debut – and Tiger Woods has taken notice. Indeed, Mickelson, who was bounced from the playoffs after a missed cut at The Northern Trust, signed up for this week's Charles Schwab Series at Ozarks National, his first start on the over-50 circuit. Through two rounds Mickelson was at 17-under 125, one shot off the 36-hole tour scoring record.
The Los Angeles Rams made a handful of moves Tuesday, the most notable of which was waiving quarterback Josh Love. Along with Love, they cut linebacker Bryan London. To take their roster spots, the Rams brought back Daniel Bituli, who they originally signed as an undrafted rookie this year, and added linebacker Derrick Moncrief, who went undrafted in 2017 and spent some time in the CFL.
The onerous task at hand for Tiger Woods is two-fold. One, he likely needs to finish fourth or better this week in the BMW Championship to advance to next week's Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta for the FedEx Cup Playoffs finale. “I have to play well,” Woods said Wednesday with an emphasis on the second word.
Serena Williams likened the frustration she felt in Tuesday's shock defeat by Maria Sakkari at the Western and Southern Open to that of being stuck in a bad relationship. Williams' 5-7 7-6(5) 6-1 loss in the round of 16 was a big blow to her preparations for next week's U.S. Open, where the 38-year-old is bidding for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title. It was a second exhausting three-setter in as many rounds for Williams, who squandered the opportunity to close out the contest on serve in the second set before her Greek opponent launched a comeback.
Serena Williams was flustered when she got called for taking too much time between points, flung away her racket after letting a lead slip away and finished surprisingly meekly in a 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-1 loss to Maria Sakkari at the Western & Southern Open on Tuesday night. This was Williams' fifth match since professional tennis resumed amid the coronavirus pandemic after a hiatus of nearly six months – and all five have gone three sets. The result against No. 13 seed Sakkari, and particularly the way the match ended, was hardly promising for Williams as the U.S. Open's start approaches next week.
One edge the Chicago Bears have in 2020 is their starting quarterback could remain a mystery until kickoff of Week 1. It will happen in practice, and it will be up to Matt Nagy if he wants to announce a starter for the opener against the Detroit Lions. The NFL's only true quarterback battle this month is a big deal in Chicago but mostly happening out of the spotlight.
Out of all of the NFL's rules, which would Bill Belichick most like to change? If it were up to the New England Patriots head coach, there wouldn't be so many discrepancies between the NFL and college football rulebooks. For example, defensive pass interference penalties in college are only up to 15 yards while NFL pass interferences gift the offense a first down and the spot of the foul.
Tiger Woods arrived at Olympia Fields for the first time in 17 years, this time with no one around to chase after his every move from the moment he stepped out of the car until he walked off the course. ''I swear, playing in front of all that, he gives up half a shot a day on the field.
Damien Harris is a player that every fantasy football owner should keep on their radar. The New England Patriots running back has an average draft position of 244, but has served as the lead back in training camp through a few weeks of work. There is a significant chance that Sony Michel, the lead running back, could start the season on the physically unable to perform list.
Joe Burrow blazing through the Cincinnati Bengals defense at training camp isn't exactly a stunning development anymore. While Burrow had a rough Sunday at times on the practice field near Paul Brown Stadium thanks to a tough pass rush, he seemed to turn it back around Monday. Burrow was on fire for most of the day, including at least one notable drive against the Bengals' first-team defense that ended in a beauty of a touchdown lob to Auden Tate.
For Pittsburgh Steelers fans, this one is long overdue. But thankfully the Pro Football Hall of Fame has finally done the right thing and named former sports writer and Steelers scout Bill Nunn a finalist for the 2021 class of the HOF. Nunn was the Steelers assistant personnel director from 1970-1987.
It never ends well for Luis Suarez but the Uruguayan has always specialised in positive starts. An inglorious exit from Barcelona is inevitable. Every transfer – Groningen to Ajax, onward to Liverpool and eventually to Barca – has been driven by the player.
Jordan Spieth is only three years removed from winning the British Open and now has to ask for sponsor exemptions. So does Brooks Koepka, who started this year at No. in the world.
Popov, 27, a German who also has American citizenship, orchestrated one of the most brilliant breakthroughs in history by winning the AIG Women's Open on Sunday, but it didn't qualify her for the second women's major of the year. The ANA Inspiration was originally scheduled to be played in April, but it was postponed to Sept. 10-13, with the season put on pause for five months amid the pandemic. The field's exemption standards are set, and as a non-member, Popov's winnings Sunday at Royal Troon do not count as official, preventing her from qualifying in the only remaining avenue open to the ANA.
The Ravens made a personnel move on Sunday many in the organization felt Baltimore needed to make, releasing former All-Pro safety Earl Thomas after the 31-year-old was involved in a skirmish with teammate Chuck Clark during last Friday's practice. Thomas' contract was terminated due to "personal conduct that has adversely affected the Baltimore Ravens," according to the team. In layman's terms, Baltimore believes that Thomas' actions left the team with no choice but to cut ties with the safety.
The Dodgers blew four leads, including in each of the final three innings, to have their four-game winning streak snapped as the Giants extended theirs to seven games. They committed two errors and made another fielding decision that might've cost them the game. Their starting pitcher, this time Julio Urías, logged fewer than five innings for the 10th time in 18 games.
You know what they say: There's no better time to make trades than in the middle of the second round. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguins apparently ascribe to that mantra, pulling the trigger on a pretty sizeable deal earlier today that sees Kasperi Kapanen, Pontus Aberg and Jesper Lindgren head to Pittsburgh in exchange for Filip Hallander, Evan Rodrigues, David Warofsky and the Penguins' 2020 1st round draft pick. Folks, that is one big package.
