While it’s hard to feel too bad about dropping the final game of a grueling West Coast road trip to the team with the best record in the NBA, the Boston Celtics’ 122 – 108 loss to the Utah Jazz Tuesday night was still kind of a bitter pill to swallow.

While there’s plenty of good things to point to and plenty of excuses as to why fans should be patient, it was clear this game — and many others — were right there for the taking. Some players are shouldering too much of the load, others are too inconsistent, and yet others need to find a role in a hurry seeing as their usual ones aren’t giving this team what it needs.

Notes

  • Jaylen Brown is a force of nature, but he can't keep shouldering this much of the load. The team needs to find more help for the likely first-time All-Star, within or without.

  • Kemba Walker has earned the right for us to be patient with him, but he can't keep shooting the team out of the game, either. It may be time to focus on more distribution and spot-up shots, attacking the cup only when there's no trees in sight.

  • Daniel Theis as a lethal 3-point shooter can transform the fortunes of this team; so can starting Tristan Thompson when he gives you 7 points and 5 rebounds -- though not in the way you want it to.

Quotes

Coach Brad Stevens: "In the first half, I thought we were great. It's not enough to be great for 24 minutes against this team." Jayson Tatum "They have the best record. They seem like they are playing the best basketball right now. Guys over there are playing well and just clicking ... they're playing really well together." Jaylen Brown "They were the better team tonight. They've got the best record in the league and to show the way they play with the freedom ... we have to find a better flow for ourselves."

First quarter reactions

Things got off to a slow start in more than one way: https://twitter.com/Tom_NBA/status/1359339455828660225?s=20 Except of course for Brown. https://twitter.com/KeithSmithNBA/status/1359341354468450304?s=20 And Payton Pritchard stayed true to his word and attacked early (but ONLY early). https://twitter.com/GwashburnGlobe/status/1359344478469947392?s=20 Boston quickly put together a very good start that still wasn't good enough to build a big lead on Utah. https://twitter.com/KeithSmithNBA/status/1359345685234135044?s=20 And the Celtics clung to a thin lead heading into the second quarter. https://twitter.com/taylorcsnow/status/1359346574694965248?s=20

Second quarter reactions

The nex frame didn't exactly start on the most auspicious tip... https://twitter.com/KeithSmithNBA/status/1359347514223296514?s=20 ...and Brown's scoring was already back to carrying too much fo the load. https://twitter.com/GwashburnGlobe/status/1359348553479573504?s=20 While Rudy Gobert got in more than one Celtic's head. https://twitter.com/SIChrisMannix/status/1359349456685182980?s=20 Forcing some changes from head coach Brad Stevens. https://twitter.com/GwashburnGlobe/status/1359349526092464132?s=20 The Georgia native was yet again transcendent: https://twitter.com/Murf56/status/1359351140354314241?s=20 Putting his growth as a player on full display: https://twitter.com/JaredWeissNBA/status/1359352320828600321?s=20 But it still wasn't good enough to hang onto that narrow lead going into the break. https://twitter.com/KeithSmithNBA/status/1359354308098154500?s=20

Third quarter reactions

The penultimate frame started slow, but not for Daniel Theis: https://twitter.com/KeithSmithNBA/status/1359358878195007494?s=20 And Taco Jay finally got a call to go his way after some early struggles. https://twitter.com/GwashburnGlobe/status/1359359257188130819?s=20 But Brown was carrying the team in this game. https://twitter.com/GwashburnGlobe/status/1359361181266432005?s=20 The good early defense seemed to have hopped on an early flight back to Boston: https://twitter.com/AdamHimmelsbach/status/1359361720146395137?s=20 And Walker's struggles continued. https://twitter.com/BrianTRobb/status/1359362321752223744?s=20 And the War on Theis had a rare victory, if you can call it that: https://twitter.com/KeithSmithNBA/status/1359363443040653315?s=20 While JB kept attacking... https://twitter.com/taylorcsnow/status/1359365769063264258?s=20 And pretty much ONLY JB did: https://twitter.com/KeithSmithNBA/status/1359366185578618880?s=20 Save some elite shooting from the German big man: https://twitter.com/celtics_stats/status/1359367759457574917?s=20 The gap grew bigger to close out the third quarter. https://twitter.com/GwashburnGlobe/status/1359367845394722817?s=20

Fourth quarter reactions

And the final frame did not go so great to start either: https://twitter.com/GwashburnGlobe/status/1359369384435863553?s=20 Though at least Brown and Theis stayed hot: https://twitter.com/KeithSmithNBA/status/1359370352481030144?s=20 And still the Celtics rallied to within four as Tatum started to (finally) warm up. https://twitter.com/GwashburnGlobe/status/1359372161513902080?s=20 And Brown tipped in his own misses, perhaps missing former teammate Enes Kanter. https://twitter.com/Max_Lederman/status/1359373724835799040?s=20 Theis lost the night's battle in the War on Himself: https://twitter.com/GwashburnGlobe/status/1359373996681273344?s=20 And for a second it looked like Boston might pull it out anyway: https://twitter.com/GwashburnGlobe/status/1359375333389193220?s=20 But without gritty closers like Marcus Smart, it would ultimately slip away... https://twitter.com/KeithSmithNBA/status/1359376184988094466?s=20 With Donovan "Shut up, Shaq" Mitchell sticking in the dagger... https://twitter.com/GwashburnGlobe/status/1359376111751282691?s=20 And handing the Celtics another winnable loss. https://twitter.com/celtics_stats/status/1359377323322179584?s=20 This post originally appeared on Celtics Wire.
