Jays' Stroman shines in return from DL
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Marcus Stroman, activated from the disabled list for a Saturday night start, threw five scoreless innings against the Los Angeles Angels.
Stroman, who had been sidelined due to shoulder fatigue, allowed six hits and a walk while striking out five. He was in line for the win before the Toronto bullpen gave up an eighth-inning run. The Blue Jays eventually won 4-1.
The Jays also sent two starting pitchers, right-hander Aaron Sanchez and left-hander Jaime Garcia, to the 10-day disabled list. Sanchez has a right index finger contusion and Garcia has soreness in his pitching shoulder.
Stroman last pitched May 8, struggling to an 0-5 start with a 7.71 ERA before Saturday. He had allowed 46 hits and 18 walks in 37 1/3 innings. He was 13-9 with a 3.09 ERA last season. His five shutout innings on Saturday lowered his ERA to 6.80.
Sanchez is 3-5 with a 4.52 ERA in 15 starts this season. He is 28-18 in his five-year career, with an ERA of 3.28.
Garcia, 2-6 with a 6.16 ERA, has lost his last six decisions. His last win came April 17. The longtime Cardinal is 69-61 in 10 big league seasons, with an ERA of 3.83.
Tim Mayza, a left-handed reliever, also was summoned from Triple-A Buffalo. In 10 innings over 10 games with the Jays earlier this season, Mayza posted an ERA of 2.70, allowing 11 hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.
