Is this the year that Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown makes the superstar leap? A quick look at his early play in 2020-21 hints he may well be on his way to another breakout year, this time jumping from high end starter to among the NBA’s elite.

Against the Brooklyn Nets on Christmas Day, the Georgia native put up 27 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and a block, but saw the Nets limit his efficiency to just 11-of-25 overall and 0-of-4 from 3 in the two teams’ Christmas Day contest in which Brown led the starters in shooting efficiency at just 44%. Forced inefficiency aside, the Cal-Berkeley product is averaging 30 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists over two games.

This is a massive jump similar to teammate Jayson Tatum’s leap in 2019-20, and while almost certain to drop significantly over time, early results suggest that Brown’s career averages of 13.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game will make considerable jumps by the end of the season.

Conversely, the former Golden Bear’s shooting is a negative to keep an eye on closely.

While his scoring, rebounding and passing growth is likely real if a bit overstated due to sample size and a larger role, his accuracy from beyond the arc (25% over two games) is a little concerning.

Some of it may be early-season rust and perhaps also adjusting to his new role and its increased responsibilities.

But, it’s an area of concern that will be critical to the Celtics success given how much of the scoring load now lies on Brown’s shoulders.

All in all a solid snapshot of what we can hope to see from the four-season veteran when you squint through the noise of small sample size theater.
