The Kansas City Chiefs are set to sign their first outside defensive free agent of the 2021 free agency period and on a pretty good deal too.

On Sunday evening, numerous reports confirmed that the Chiefs had agreed to terms with former Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Jarran Reed on a one-year deal. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the contract will carry $5 million in guaranteed money. Multiple reports confirm that he can make up $7 million total with incentives.

Given what the Chiefs’ cap space was looking like prior to this signing, this looks like a good deal for both sides. Kansas City gets an impact player at a very affordable price that won’t prevent them from signing other players. Reed will get the chance to compete on a perennial Super Bowl contender and hit free agency again next March.

The Chiefs had some competition when it came to getting this deal done too. According to The Athletic’s Nate Taylor, a total of seven other teams were in on Reed. Ultimately, it seems like his decision to join Kansas City wasn’t all about money.

If the contract and beating out seven teams to sign Reed wasn’t enough to get you excited, perhaps this detail will. Reed won’t count toward the compensatory pick formula as he was released by the Seahawks and not an unrestricted free agent by way of his contract expiring. That means if one of the Chiefs’ free agents goes and signs a qualifying deal, that won’t be canceled out by this signing and it could earn the Chiefs a compensatory pick in 2022.
