Janoris Jenkins downgraded to questionable vs. Lions

Janoris Jenkins is the New York Giants’ top cornerback. The man known as Jackrabbit has developed a reputation for shutting down an offense’s top receiver.

Just ask Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant. Bryant only managed two catches for 43 yards in the 19-3 Week 1 loss to the Dallas Cowboys while being blanketed by Jenkins. Jenkins exited the field after the game with a large wrap on his right hand but took it off once he entered the locker room.

His name was a surprise on the Giants’ final injury report in advance of their home opener against the Detroit Lions Monday night. Jenkins dealt with hand and ankle issues throughout the week was downgraded to questionable Sunday.

The Lions’ top receiver is Golden Tate, who had 10 receptions for 107 yards in the Lions’ 35-23 regular season opening victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Tate normally lines up in the slot, which means he would be covered by Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Jenkins’ assignment would be Marvin Jones, who caught two passes for 37 yards and a touchdown against Arizona and is a threat because of his speed.

Jenkins practiced all week so it is very likely he will play against Detroit. If he cannot go, the Giants could turn to either Michael Hunter or Ross Cockrell. Hunter only played in three snaps against the Cowboys last week. Cockrell, who arrived via a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers at the end of the preseason, did not play last week.
